Bilaspur - Himachal Pradesh: Glory of First Planned Hill Town




Bilaspur is a picturesque town in Himachal Pradesh with abundant natural beauty. It is on the banks of the River Sutlej in the outer Himalayan hills. Originally founded in 1663 it had a rebirth when the new Bilaspur Township was conceived as the first planned hill town in the country.

Since Bilaspur has most of the catchment area of Govind Sagar Lake it will be full after the rainy season. This makes it ideal for water sports. One can do kayaking, motor boating, and sailing among other things.

Bandla top is the take-off site for the Himachal Aero Adventure Institute. Bilaspur enjoys an edge in Paragliding over others because the space it has for maneuvering is three times higher than other destinations. This gives a paraglider almost eight hours of flying time as against 3 maximum at places like Manali and elsewhere.

By Air: Airports of Shimla, Chandigarh, and Bhuntar are in a radius of fewer than 150 km.

By Rail: Kiratpur Sahib is the nearest narrow gauge railway station is at Shimla, located 65 km and 85 km from Bilaspur which are connected by regular bus services.

By Road: Bilaspur can be reached by road from Shimla and Chandigarh.
