Kullu - Himachal Pradesh: The Cool & Scenic Hill Station
Kullu, called the valley of Gods, is 240 km from Shimla and is located in the Western Himalayas. It is on the banks of the River Beas in the lap of the Himalayas. Kullu is famous for its cultural festivals, apple orchards, and shawls. Kullu is above sea level by 1219 meters and its natural beauty peaks in the spring season. It is 80 km long and 2 km wide.
IMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT KULLU:
The valley originally meant "end of the habitable world. Kullu in the lower Himalayas blossoms in summer and Dussehra festival in October.
Its Raghunath Temple was built in 1660 in honor of the valley's patron deity, Lord Ram. Some 2 km away the Jagannath Devi Temple provides a panoramic view of the alpine area. To reach there you will need a steady climb of some 90 minutes.
TERRAIN:
As a broad open valley, Kullu has the Beas river flowing between Manali and Largi. Its majestic hills are covered with Pine and Deodar forests and sprawling Apple Orchards.
The Beas river meanders through forests of Deodar, Pine trees between the Pre Panjal, Great Himalayan range, and Lower Himalayas.
GETTING THERE TO KULLU
By Air: The nearest airport is Bhunter (Kullu) some 12 km away.
By Rail: The narrow gauge railhead at Jogindernagar is 90 km away. The nearest broad gauge railhead is Chandigarh which is 270 km away.
By Road: You can drive down to Kullu from Shimla, Delhi, and other places. From Delhi to Kullu it may take about 12 hours. There are buses plying from Delhi, Ambala, Shimla, and Pathankot. For those looking for hotels, the Sarvari Bazaar bus stand gives better proximity to Dhalpur Maidan which is closer to most of the hotels.
CLIMATE (WEATHER) IN KULLU
In winter heavy woolens are recommended and in summer the temperature is pleasant and cotton is suggested.ACCOMMODATION: Himachal Tourism runs the Hotel Sarvari with all modern amenities.
THINGS TO DO IN KULLU
Treks: The valley has several trek routes. The major ones are over the Chanderkhani Pass to Malana village; Jalori Pass to Shimla: and Pin Parvati Pass to Sarahan. River Beas opens excellent white water rafting can be enjoyed.
