Shimla - Himachal Pradesh: The Ever Fascinating Queen Of Hills


Shimla is known as the queen of Indian hill stations. It is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and is at an altitude of 2200 meters or 7200 feet from sea level.

Shimla was the erstwhile British summer capital. The name Shimla comes from Shyamala Devi--an incarnation of the goddess Kali. Shimla is surrounded by dense forests of pine, deodar, and oak and oozes immense natural beauty.

 

BEST TIME TO VISIT SHIMLA

Though Shimla can be visited throughout the year the best time is April to August and again from December to January. The snowfall in Shimla is world-famous. During summer months the temperature varies from 16 to 28 degrees C and in winter it will be in the range of 0~07 o C.


GETTING THERE TO SHIMLA

By Air: Shimla Airport is some 23 km away from the main city and there are direct flights from Delhi, Kulu, and Chandigarh.


By Train: Shimla is connected to Kalka by meter Gauge rail and the journey of 98 km takes around 7 hours and passes through 100 tunnels en route. The toy train is a fantastic experience for all.


By Road: Shimla is well connected by road with all cities and major towns. Regular buses ply between Chandigarh and Shimla.

Shimla offers good accommodation. But it is good to book the accommodation in advance as peak touring season can lead to regrets. There are around 400 hotels in Shimla including the 5-star Cecil Hotel among many 3-star hotels.

AT THE LOWER BAZAAR OR THE SUBZI MANDI DESPITE TRAFFIC SNARL BUT THERE IS VIBRANT LIFE. YOU CAN GET THE BEST WALKING STICKS AT THE FAMOUS LAKKAR BAZAAR. OTHER FANCIED SHOPPING ITEMS ARE KULLU AND KINNAURI SHAWLS AND TIBETAN CARPETS.
